, crews in daly city will get back to a massive clean-up effort. we first showed you yesterday a wall of mud and water buried several streets of a neighborhood near hillside park. cbs 5 reporter cate caugiran is in daly city where an aging pipe is apparently blamed for the problem. >> reporter: michelle, you are correct. and city officials say that they are going to work to restore or repair that pipe and they actually admit there could be more in this area. but let's focus on the clean-up right now. last night's cleaning efforts weren't successful in this daly city neighborhood. the water main burst brought about inches of mud down on the road. here's a look from our cbs 5 chopper. neighbors were startled at 4:30 a.m. when police told them to leave their homes. 45,000 gallons of water came downhill. city leaders say it was because of a cast iron pipe made in the 1930s. >> you can see the pipe actually sheared off. we have an aging system. we know that we have pipes in the ground that are probably, you know, close or past their useful life. that's not uncommon within any community wit

station, this is the kron 4 news. >> we start with a daly city neighborhood that has been inundated with water & mud. jackie sissel these homes and cars are there any injuries? >> there are no injuries. you can see there have been neighborhood is trying to figure out what happened. the mud, the water that rushed down. aunt of break happened up there. if that is where-that water main- break happened up there-here is video from earlier. what we do know is a run for:a 30 the leaked c to run 430 -they started running down a run 4:30 and 80 homes were evacuated. -eight homes-were evacuated. perhaps the hillside behind it could cause a landslide. 40 people have been evacuated and it is impacting four square city blocks and 100 residents are without water. we got a chance to talk to the north county fire district spokesperson. he spoke about this, earlier. >> that is what we are going is to determine and assess the safety of the damage. in the hillside. there's no immediate threat. we wanted to get people to evacuate it did. just to keep them out of the area. >> what we are being told is t

in daly city where crews have plenty of work ahead of them. cate. >> reporter: michelle, you are right. the equipment behind me you can see is in place and ready to go and clean-up crews are expected to be back in daly city in a few hours to continue yesterday's work. that water main break caused quite a mess. you see that thick layer of mud covering the road in front of neighbors' homes. from above, our chopper 5 shows you how far it extended. 12 homes were evacuated after 45,000 gallons of water caused that land slide yesterday morning. neighbors are still worried about the integrity of the hillside. there was no damage to the homes. >> hopefully nothing will happen. especially with the rain coming this weekend. >> reporter: engineers tested the hill before allowing people back into their homes. city officials say an 8" pipe connected to a water tank burst and they blame the pipe's old age. it was made in the 1930s. city officials say they will be working hard to fix the pipes. they say the pipes are still basically -- there could be more old pipes like the one that broke yeste

continue to following breaking news all morning long for you. a neighborhood in daly city flooded out this morning, prompting a number of families to evacuate. christie smith just arrived on scene and has the latest information for us. any word where that water is even coming from? >> reporter: well, that's a good question. we definitely know that it's coming from up the hill. we're here in daly city and this is where the water is flowing down the hill and about as far as we can go because police are stopping us from going any further. not just water, but a huge flow of mud. there is apparently some sort of reservoir or water storage facility up the hill that's having a problem and it's tied to some sort of main break in the area. that according to a man that i just got off the phone with, with the water district here in daly city. this is a hillside park neighborhood where evacuations are under way. i spoke with one officer here. he's from the broadmoor police department. he said he was called in about 4:30 this morning to help with traffic control. his boots this morning completely

with erica in a few minutes. >> we begin with the massive flooding in daly city. winner of the reservoir ruptured that sent 45,000 gal. of water down hill. it affected for blocks. the pipe had been in use since the early 1930's. no homes were flooded but 12 homes were evacuated as a precaution. there is no report of injuries. >> cleanup started immediately yesterday morning. as of last night they are putting the finishing touches on the massive cleanup. four streets were flooded. it took time to dig the cars out. here is what residents in the area had to say. >> i was like wow. it cleared out quickly. by 5:00 all the cars on the left side in the mud was gone. i thought it would be longer. i'm sure it would be longer to assess what happened spirit that park is gone. >> has some as i stepped outside everything was covered with mud i cannot see the street. my car was engulfed with mud. when i walked on the street it was up to my knees. >> when we walked out we saw mud all over the place. >> when we first left the house of mud was first starting to, you could see mud covering the g

city boy has been reunited with his father at the daly city police department after he went missing on friday. . >> tears were streemg down hanzu wren's face as he explained why he didn't return home on sunday and never called his father to let him know he was okay. the 11-year-old says he was spriedz when he saw police officers at his friend's house looking for him. >> i'm sorry about this. i feel sad about my dad not finding me. i forgot to tell him. i just don't like want to know. >> daly city investigators say they worked around the clock to find wren since his father reported him missing on sunday at 9:00 p.m., two days after he was last seen at his school policy to middle school. sergeant michael barton says wren didn't have a cell phone, and the boy told his dad he was going to spend the night at a friend's house over the weekend but ended up going to a different friend's home without telling his father. >> our detectives have been work on stop work lead after lead after lead and what they found was another child that was a friend of his that lived in the same area and they w

tellez. we begin this morning with the flooding in daly city where the clean up has begun. we have both nbc bay area's christie smith and bob redell redell with us. we start off with christie smith of the details and what happened. any clean up yet, christie? >> reporter: good morning. it has been a morning and a mess here in daly city. there are front loaders and vacuum trucks everywhere trying to deal with this mudslide. it started with a water pipe that broke off. i wanted to show you what it has done to the hillside this morning as a section came down bringing trees and debris right into the neighborhood. neighbors say it sounded like a storm. water rushing down the hillside along lusanne avenue carrying debris and trees trapping parked cars. it was just to the left of romero's home. >> i was not aware there was a tank up there. >> reporter: what do you think now that you know what happened? >> i'm guessing, you know, infrastructure might be getting old. >> reporter: the gap in the hillside shows where it came from. there is a 978,000 gallon water tank that was 3/4 full. >> it

daly city neighborhood buried by a mud slide. they are trying to shore up the hillside before the rain hits. cbs 5 reporter joe vazquez with how exactly they are doing that. joe. >> reporter: hey, allen. from this perspective you can see the neighborhood here and then way up on the hillside you can see that huge crater where all that water came spewing out of yesterday. it cuts right to left and it barely missed the homes here. now there's another concern, a storm is in the forecast. stacking hay and clearing storm drains, two tasks that have daly city crews hard at work today. the hay is being used to contain the substantial mud still covering nearby hillside park. they will clean that mud up later because right now, they are focused on what they call weatherization making sure the upcoming rainstorms aren't going to do more damage to the neighborhood. it turns out yesterday's mud slide swamped all the storm drains so now workers are having to find them and then dig them out so they can help divert any rain. >> so we're going to take our remote control tv camera to go into the pi

this hillside. >> that is correct, pam. it is of some daly city and it is four city blocks in this neighborhood. ah this water tank is on top of this hill. it is where it eventually came from. the water main break came from this help and poured down this hill and these homes along bonnie street that were evacuated. and on to luasanne avenue. all of the cars that were parked and the mud extended down to price st. it has been covered with just a foot of mud or team coverage continues with chair stone. and j.r. has the latest. >> the working crews have finished but they are coming out again tomorrow the have made quite a bit of progress. the fact that you can see the pavement is good news but at one point they had about 23 in. in mud of lost out to my kneecap. and no longer is that is the good news but look be directly behind me. and you can see this sea of mud. let me show you some of this video. this has kept busy the city crews, with 45,000 gal. of water. and spilled down into this park area. it had the water into the park and st. many of these people live in this area and they tho

campbell. >>> we're tracking daly city flooding. tara moriarty is live on the scene. good morning, tara. >> reporter: good morning. you know, the damage here is pretty incredible. if you take a look behind me here, you can see where the mud and the water ended but it began all the way up the hill where those trees are and this entire neighborhood is just basically -- has mud all over the streets. about two dozen people had to be evacuated off bonnie street. the mud swept down the street. deputy was the first news -- ktvu was the first news crew to arrive on the scene. we saw the water mixed with the mud gushing down the hillside. the brake happening off luzane avenue and bonnie street. crews have it under control. the water has stopped racing down the hill. we spoke to the neighbor who called 911 initial. he said it was scary -- initially. he stayed was scary initially. >> the entire lawn was covered. there was a stream going down the street. i went downstairs and i got on my cell phone and called 911. >> reporter: the mud is up past the car tires at some -- some of the vehicles. severa

daly city. that afternoon highs will not be much warmer. mountain view will be as 61 and 59 degrees for sunnyvale. it will be a chilly one and sweait's winter weather is on tad.sweater weathn tact. monday will be a little bit warmer but we do have a wet weather once again as we head into the middle of next week. >> we are looking at a bit of the back up on the bay bridge toll plaza. there was a stall on incline and it was cleaquickly cleared. if you are heading out right now you will probably encounter normal conditions. it is now barely backed up on the 880. for the san mateo bridge is still a pretty good ride 11 to 13 minutes. in the westbound direction. at the golden gate bridge 1 01 south brown is still an easy trip. looking at your traffic map here as we pick up the shore freeway want. this drive time is now 18 minutes. 680 south is starting to slow down at the 242 interchange. for your ride through the south bay 1 01 is picking up slow traffic.
